When planning a holiday I always go online first of all to see what deals are out there. Usually my main port of call is Holidayhypermarket which is a great little holiday site, easy to use and always bags of holidays going cheap. Now personally, I like Europe and somewhere nice and warm – well it’s the arthritis you see!! Cold is a definite no-no for me as its quite painful……so anywhere there is sun, sea and sand is great!! It just has to be over 20-30 degrees in the shade. So generally looking at Greece, Canaries and Spain for starters.

Play both sides

I love Corfu and have visited Sidari many times now with my older sister…..always self catering, so we don’t have to be tied to eating when we’re told to. Love that freedom of getting up anytime and staying on the beach till the tide actually comes in…….as long as we don’t get carried out with the tide!!!! Anyway, once I’ve picked a few holidays I keep them on my computer, sometimes print them out. Then I take a trip to the travel agents on the high street and ask them if they can get the same holidays a bit cheaper for me. Sometimes they can’t beat the prices, but they might offer to throw in the plane seats for free, or even a meal on the plane for free, or even both!! Some of the travel agents you can barter with, because they really DO want your custom. So it is worth the hassle of being cheeky sometimes. Always worth a trip to travel agents as you just cannot barter online!! Whilst in the travel agents sometimes I cheekily ask if they can include some excursions for me – well because I am over 60 and not very good at finding my way round abroad ☺ Sometimes this works, just to get my custom they throw a few excursions in with the price of the holiday – great. Of course, some travel agents just cannot beat the online prices and cannot offer you any extras, so just walk out and go back online.

Don’t make this one mistake

There are numerous online holiday companies, not just the one mentioned above. Just take your time and weigh up ALL the options open to you. A word of caution: Some friends of mine followed my advice to the letter and managed to secure a REALLY cheap holiday with lots of freebies thrown in. Alas, they ended up at a hotel that looked beautiful from the outside and looked spotless on the inside – but the food was terrible and the bar closed every night at 11pm – and that was an adults only hotel!!! So please, wherever you plan to holiday, read all the reviews you can about the hotel or area before you book…..it will save you heartache and wasted cash!

Just one more thing

One other thing that I should mention is holiday insurance. You just never know what may happen whilst abroad. Especially if like me you are over 55 or 60 with medical conditions. I find it useful to be open and honest with your holiday insurance company. If you have had a heart bypass, even though it was over 20 years ago, you still should tell them. No matter how trivial your condition or how many years ago it happened, always be up front and tell them. Otherwise, they may just not honour your policy if something goes wrong and you haven’t told them about your verucca!! Do an online search for the companies offering holiday insurance, there are some cracking good ones out there, whilst there are also some horror ones too. I find All Clear is very good, another one is HolidayRisk. Both of these are quite good and offer reasonably priced yearly policies as well as one trip policies. Whilst talking about travel insurance, please do not go on holiday without first making a will – well, you just never know!!!! Your Will Be Done is the easiest and most professional website you can ever use. Go for it and enjoy yourself!
